Lady Rowena is quickly assailed by strange, supernatural events reminiscent of a haunted house.
Exhausted by her anguish, little supported by an opium-addicted husband who does not love her, she falls ill and dies.In the mortuary chamber, the narrator finds himself alone watching over his deceased wife.
In the middle of the night, many signs show that the corpse comes back to life and then death takes it back.
Terrified, he witnesses these successive resurrections until, in the early morning, the corpse rises from the mortuary bed surrounded by its shroud.
Pulling aside the sheet, he realizes that he has before his eyes a tall young woman, with eyes and long black hair, Ligeia.
